Meet Demand In 48 Hours: Delhi Medical Practioners’ Ultimatum Into Mamata Banerjee

Resident doctors of AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, who boycotted work on Friday in protest against attacks on their colleagues in Kolkata, have now given a 48-hour ultimatum into West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to match the specific demands of the nation’s agitating health practitioners, failing that they said they would proceed on indefinite strike.

Members of this AIIMS Resident Doctors Association (RDA), who skipped perform on Saturday, said if the requirements of their West Bengal medical practioners aren’t met within two days, they would be forced to resort to an indefinite strike. “We all know the hostile and unapologetic attitude of this government of West Bengal. Our demonstration at AIIMS, New Delhi continues until justice has been meted out,” the AIIMS RDA said in a statement.

“Based on the decision taken in a general body meeting held on June 14, RDA problems an ultimatum of 48 hrs into the West Bengal government to satisfy the requirements of the prominent doctors there, neglecting which we would be required to resort to an impending strike at AIIMS, New Delhi. We hope our colleagues across the state will join us in this hour of need,” the statement said.

They voiced their gratitude Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan for his instantaneous and proactive actions to resolve the impasse. “We sincerely hope that he will deal with this matter of utmost importance with the urgency that it respects,” he said. The doctors, however, will continue to wear Conventions and helmets at work for a indication of protest.

The 48-hour ultimatum from AIIMS doctors comes days after Mamata Banerjee gave a four-hour ultimatum into the striking doctors within her state to withdraw their strike or vacate hostels. Expressing solidarity with the health practitioners that are agitating against an attack in their coworkers at West Bengal, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a hit on June 17.

The IMA has also decided to keep their protest on Saturday and Sunday condemning the continuing distress of these resident doctors and also repeated occurrence of harassment,” it also said. All these protests will consist of wearing black stripes, dharnas, peace marches. IMA has also requested the aid from all associations of their fraternity to join with the agitation.

The top human body of physicians from the country also renewed its demand for a fundamental law to examine violence against healthcare workers in hospitals and stated that law enforcement should provide a minimum sentence of standardised jail to violators.

Harsh Vardhan on Friday supported the clinical fraternity’s demand for a fundamental law to check violence against healthcare workers in hospitals and said such crimes need to be created non-bailable.
